Seven islands in the Tyrrhenian sea in the province in Messina, all of volcanic origin: Alicudi, Filicudi, Panarea, Stromboli, Salina, Lipari and Volcano, the nearest island to Milazzo.
The Aeolian Islands are a popular tourist destination in the summer, and attract up to 200,000 visitors annually. Rising out of the cobalt-blue seas off Sicily's northeastern coast, the Unesco-protected Aeolian Islands (Vulcano, Lipari, Salina, Panarea, Stromboli, Filicudi and Alicudi) are a little piece of paradise, a magical outdoor playground offering thrills and spills at every turn.
The Aeolian Islands are quite unique, and absolutely brimming with lively individuality and ancient cultural quirks which render them as refreshing for the mind as for the body and soul.
Things To Do
All of this naturally leads to an atmosphere which, while differing in its particulars from island to island, is nonetheless universally wonderful. However, quite apart from the amazing scenery, history, culture, and climate, the islands also offer a whole host of more specific attractions to suit every taste. Whether it’s diving on pirate shipwrecks, taking a cycling tour of the islands, enjoying the scenery and history from the comfort of a luxury boat tour, or absorbing the sumptuous delights of geothermal mud baths and springs, there is plenty for everyone. All topped off, of course, by the delectable cuisine of the islands. As you would expect from an area so in tune with the ocean, seafood abounds on the local menu, but there’s plenty to please everyone’s palate. All cooked to perfection, of course – you’ll be hard pressed to find a bad restaurant on the islands!
Vulcano
(Sicilian: Vurcanu) is a small volcanic island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, about 25 km (16 mi) north of Sicily and the southernmost of the eight Aeolian Islands. It is 21 km2 (8 sq mi) in area, rises to 499 m (1,637 ft) above sea level, and contains several volcanic centers, including one of four active non-submarine volcanoes in Italy. Volcano (Hierà), is the closest island to Sicily, is located 12 miles off Cape Milazzo and Lipari is separate from a small canal off just over a mile. Its name derives from the Roman god and is composed of volcanoes Lentia, Piano, Vulcanello and Fossa, the most active of the four. The Beach of the fumaroles, where you can bathe in the "warm sea", and the Black Beaches, destinations are definitely recommended for tourists, which should not pass up the opportunity to hike to the crater, the Valley of Monsters, the Grotto Horse and Venus Pool, the latter two can easily be made with boats hired.
Lipari
The island of Lipari, in the Greek language indicated by the name of Meligunis, is the largest archipelago and has about 10,000 inhabitants. Important tourist attraction is the boat ride, thanks to which you can see wild landscapes, wide bays and beautiful backdrops. The historical importance of the island is testified by the remains of the Acropolis Greek, from the Norman Cathedral and Castle, very interesting sites worth a visit along with the Aeolian Archaeological Museum, surrounded by ancient walls built in the sixteenth century Spanish and housed in several buildings, divided into sections that allow us to reconstruct the history of eolian since prehistoric times, thanks to the remains found in the Aeolian Islands.
Salina
Salina (Didyme), is the greenest island of the Aeolian archipelago. The island of Salina is composed of three distinct autonomous municipalities of Santa Marina, Malfa and Leni. In Pollara you can see, at a distance, the house where was shot the film "Il Postino", with Philippe Noiret in the part of Pablo Neruda and the unforgettable Massimo Troisi in the mailman. Besides its natural beauty and the home of "Il Postino", the island is renowned for the production of "capers" and "Malvasia", a distinctive wine with a very sweet flavor and aroma derived from raisins, vaguely similar to raisin. The numerous hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation provide a high quality. There are also numerous rental properties, to enjoy long holidays in the island.
Panarea
The tourist sees since his arrival the fortified town and the Town Hall, established in the former Franciscan monastery.
The soil of the island is of volcanic tuff, obsidian and pumice, and its coasts are characterized by cliffs and sea stacks that many face. The presence of pumice, which is still being extracted from the quarries on the island, features many seafood places. On 24 August we celebrated St. Bartholomew with fireworks visible from all Aeolian Islands. The typical crop of Lipari is used to approach the most remote and isolated beaches, or to easily reach the nearby islands of Vulcano and Salina, and finally for fishing (very common one for squid).
Stromboli
Stromboli is the most active volcanoes in Europe, whose volcanic activity, which lasted uninterrupted for millennia, is manifested through a continuous and constant repetition of explosions from the vents, coming out of fountains of lava and ash, which usually roll along "La Sciara".The volcanic phenomena can be observed from close range on a hiking on the slopes of the volcano, lasting a few hours. The island, with its volcanic activity that attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists, is constantly monitored to avoid any damage to the population. To bring to the fore in the '50s we thought even with Roberto Rossellini film "Stromboli land of God", who had the lead female role Ingrid Bergman.
Filicudi
The island is located further west, like the other volcanic islands of the Aeolian archipelago, derives its name from "Ericusa", for the large quantity of heather on its territory. The island of Alicudi is the ideal destination for those who dream of a holiday "adventure" in a piece of land consists almost exclusively of narrow streets and steep steps to walk.
